What does the American Dream mean today?
For Niko Bellic, fresh off the boat from Europe, it is the hope he can escape his past. For his cousin, Roman, it is the vision that together they can find fortune in Liberty City, gateway to the land of opportunity.
As they slip into debt and are dragged into a criminal underworld by a series of shysters, thieves and sociopaths, they discover that the reality is very different from the dream in a city that worships money and status, and is heaven for those who have them and a living nightmare for those who dont.

We’ve been building a couple exciting projects on the CakePHP framework, and have recently been using the new 1.2 branch. So, as a developer, it’s been frustrating to try and look up information only to find the provided Manual was for 1.1 only... and it was out-of-date at that.
There was always excellent documentation for both 1.1 and 1.2, mostly around the API, but there were a couple times I needed a clearer explanation of a function or implementation.
The new Manual, now located under it’s own subdomain, sports the look and feel the API and Trac pages have been using. A nice change, as it happily takes advantage of my widescreen monitor. The 1.1 branch documentation has been shuffled around a bit, so if you were used to looking something up there, this is going to take some getting used to. But other than that small detail, I appreciate the update... thanks guys!

The first trailer for the comicbook movie, The Spirit, has been released. The movie is being directed by Frank Miller, creator of 300 and Sin City, and who helped direct the former. I know Frank Miller’s style in comic books of late, but I must admit I’m surprised to see this movie shot it exactly the same style as Sin City.
Now, don’t get me wrong! Sin City kicked all kinds of ass, but I wouldn’t equate the Will Eisner created character with Frank Miller’s black and white gritty crime style. Guess I’ll have to see it when it comes out, just with a slightly different set of expectations.
Visual Lizard is proud to announce the re-design and launch of www.susannehou.com. Susanne is a virtuoso violinist that is based in New York and Toronto and has left her mark in music history by being the first violinist ever to capture 3 Gold Medals with unanimous decisions at international violin competitions.
We were initially approached to develop a site for Susanne in the summer of 2007 as her current site was not meeting her needs. Susanne travels the world and needed her site to contain fresh content and updates in regards press and the shows she was taking part in. Our Catalyst CMS was a perfect fit for her.
We enlisted our friends at spacecadet design to assist on the graphical side of the project as we were working diligently to provide her with a site with features that were customized to her personal style and taste.
Using our proprietary Catalyst Content Management System, we were able to assist Susanne with features such as:
- easy to update current news and press section
- current events
- photo gallery
- customized Hou to Dine Section allowing Susanne the opportunity to let us in on her favorite dining locations around the globe
The site is already getting rave reviews and we are looking forward to seeing Susanne on her next visit to Winnipeg.
This week Paypal announced that it will no longer process transactions that come from deprecated browsers. In this BBC news article a Paypal representative noted that there are still a significant number of people using very old deprecated browsers that do not carry the appropriate level of certificate security to safely allow for secure transactions to take place.
These insecure browsers allow for phishing websites to track the transactions which allow the criminal to gain access to a person’s personal information including passwords and credit card numbers.
It is important to remember to keep your browsers up to date. Criminals using phishing attacks create their fake websites in a way to take advantage of these security vulnerabilities. As described in the article, an obsolete browser will not trigger the Paypal script which determines whether the user is using a secure browser. If you are not using a secure browser, you cannot be sure if your personal information is vulnerable.
Paypal has taken the step to not allow for transactions from insecure browsers to take place as a way to inform their clients about the risks of using this deprecated technology.
Paypal said it was "an alarming fact that there is a significant set of users who use very old and vulnerable browsers such as Internet Explorer 4". [ Paypal to block ’unsafe browsers’ - BBC News Online ]
Paypal has also noted which browsers are safe and support EVSSL certificates. The current releases of Firefox and Internet Explorer 7 have full support, but Safari for both Mac and PC do not currently support EVSSL.
While we here in the office really like Safari as a browser, not all of us use it to make purchases over the internet.
In "The Forbidden Kingdom," American teenager Jason (Michael Angarano), who is obsessed with Hong Kong cinema and kungfu classics, finds an antique Chinese staff in a pawn shop: the legendary stick weapon of the Chinese sage and warrior, the Monkey King (Jet Li). With the lost relic in hand, Jason unexpectedly finds himself transported back to ancient China.
There, he meets the drunken kungfu master, Lu Yan (Jackie Chan); an enigmatic and skillful Silent Monk (Jet Li); and a vengeance-bent kungfu beauty, Golden Sparrow (Crystal Liu Yi Fei), who lead him on his quest to return the staff to its rightful owner, the Monkey King - imprisoned in stone by the evil Jade Warlord (Collin Chou) for five hundred years. Along the way, while attempting to outmaneuver scores of Jade Warriors, Cult Killers and the deadly White Hair Demoness, Ni Chang (Li Bing Bing), Jason learns about honor, loyalty and friendship, and the true meaning of kungfu, and thus frees himself.

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton join forces again in a big-screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s award-winning musical thriller "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street." Depp stars in the title role as a man unjustly sent to prison who vows revenge, not only for that cruel punishment, but for the devastating consequences of what happened to his wife and daughter. When he returns to reopen his barber shop, Sweeney Todd becomes the Demon Barber of Fleet Street who "shaved the heads of gentlemen who never thereafter were heard from again." Joining Depp is Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett, Sweeney’s amorous accomplice, who creates diabolical meat pies. The cast also includes Alan Rickman, who portrays the evil Judge Turpin, who sends Sweeney to prison and Timothy Spall as the Judge’s wicked associate Beadle Bamford and Sacha Baron Cohen is a rival barber, the flamboyant Signor Adolfo Pirelli.
