Manitoba Moose

Manitoba Moose

Overview

It was a matter of change for the Manitoba Moose Hockey Club when they approached Visual Lizard and Fusion Design to create a new website for them back in June, 2008. Feeling that their existing site was no longer capable of offering their fans what they wanted, the Moose essentially came to us looking for a hockey super site.

Although site construction for moosehockey.com proved to be a colossal endeavor and required the advanced application of many web programming languages (HTML, PHP, MySqL, CSS, Javascript), the final product that exists today is a highly-functional, multi-dimensional, virtual hockey playground that is used by hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

Details and technical challenges

The Manitoba Moose website was developed using Visual Lizard’s Catalyst Content Management System, and through working with Fusion Design, was integrated to produce a far more enhanced user experience. Creating nearly two dozen templates inherently took a long time, but it was absolutely necessary for a site that contains so much cross-connecting information.

A paramount challenge for Visual Lizard was creating a comprehensive database of all the Manitoba Moose players statistics (season-by-season, dating back to 1996) so that it could be updated by the team itself.  This was accomplished through connecting to external statistical sites and making changes to the HTML and database code in order to easily allow changes to be made by the teams internal administrators.

Furthermore, creating customized programming to allow certain features to work on the Moose website was time consuming. Some custom features that were programmed specifically for this project included: a live updated schedule, a news module, two-way blogging capabilities, a graphic display of current events and promotions offered by the Moose and the MTS Centre, several photo galleries and wallpaper for fans to download.

Finally, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention the Moose TV section because we are particularly proud of it. We programmed a customized Flash video player (which has the ability to be viewed in full screen mode) as well as a scrolling gallery section which includes previews, highlights, promos and more. We included a video channel library so that the Moose administrative staff can categorize their videos and incorporated the video player into the content management system so videos could be easily updated and edited.

Features List

Timeframe

The initial programming for moosehockey.com began in early June 2008 with the programming and design of 22 separate templates, an arduous task based on the amount of content that the Moose wanted to provide their fans. Over the next two months, templates were broken out and developed for the multitude of features on the site (news, games modules, Moose TV, statistics).  In the fourth and final month, adjustments such as modifications to the video modules and re-sizing images were made. Additional programming was applied to allow the site to be displayed in various Internet browsers.
