Our Projects

Running the gamut from corporate web sites to public service pages, we have experience in nearly every area online. For more information on what we can do to help put your web site to work, check out the services area. Otherwise, feel free to email us about any of the projects we have showcased. We are always happy to hear what others have to say about our work.

Where to Wee

Where to Wee

Overview

Where to Wee is a clever new iPhone application (which is also available for the iPod Touch) that gives people a tool to find public restrooms on short notice.  The web application and accompanying website, which was developed by four Manitoba companies (Where to Wee Inc., Visual Lizard Inc., Centrix.ca and Spacecadet Design ) uses Google Maps API technology and an expansive online database to link users with nearby washrooms within a 10 block radius, relative to their geographic location.

A prominent feature of Where to Wee is the ability to add, classify and rate restrooms around the world.  There is also a built-in functionality which allows subscribers to upload photos to the application’s database wherever they may be. This further customizes each restroom’s profile.

Details and technological challenges

The aesthetic centerpiece of the Where to Wee application and it’s website is the embedded Google map and [Find bathroom] search bar which allow users to quickly and fluidly (no pun intended) navigate their way around the globe in search of nearby restrooms.

There were many fun challenges for Visual Lizard on this particular project. The integration of a database with Google Maps and making a website work with an iPhone application were both firsts for us. We built our own API (application programming interface) to communicate with Google Maps technology. We developed the database so that users could easily find bathroom locations based on their geographic location by latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates.

Through the application of a unique JavaScript data encoding tool known as JSON, our database communicates with Google Map’s API to complete any users search query.

Features

  • Search Results list restrooms close to where you are
  • Rating system (*****)
  • Images section (upload/view pictures of restrooms in the database)
  • Filter function (allows users to filter their search results by common bathroom features. Eg. handicap access, baby changing table, single room)
  • Mass additions capability (several thousands of restrooms can be added by site administrators)
  • Registration for contest participation
  • Moderation (only actual restrooms will go in to system)

Timeframe

The first talks and meetings for the Where to Wee project took place in January 2009 and it wasn’t until this past spring that programming began. The iPhone application was approved to be sold on the AppStore in September, 2009 and it continues to be tweaked by administrators and updated by users on an ongoing basis.
