2016: International Year of Pulses

2016 is the United Nations International Year of Pulses. The United Nations is promoting the use and consumption of this sustainable and versatile crop around the world. They are doing this through education and the promotion of recipes that use pulses as a primary ingredient. The international nature of the site means that some of the pages in the site have been translated into 5 other languages other than English. These include French, Spanish, Turkish, Hindi and Arabic.

Who Grows Pulses?

Public submitted videos of farmers who grow pulse crops is part of the interactive nature of this site. Farmers from around the world have submitted short videos of themselves on their farms talking about the advantages of growing these crops. We built in the functionality to have these videos display upon the google map API to show the visitor where these farmers are from and some of the details about what they do.

Cooking with Pulses

The design provides visually intriguing and colourful look for promoting this crop. Public submitted recipes are displayed with beautiful photographs of the dishes along with a list of ingredients and a set of steps for each recipe. We've also provided the option for an instructional video to be available to show the visitor the process of preparing some of these recipes. As a way of promoting the international nature of these recipes, they are categorized into country of origin and the type of pulses used in each recipe.
